2003 Schools Committee Reports2000 Schools Committee ReportWe had 163 applicants from Colorado for the class of '04. Fourteen were admitted, and 11 of those are now enjoying their first year. This group mostly came from the Denver metro area, with one girl from Colorado Springs. Other years we have been successful with gaining admission for more of our rural candidates. We have been working quite closely with the dean and our admissions officer, Hannah Weiss '00. This fall (2000) they will be helping with recruiting in Vail, Pueblo, Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins. We hope that this outreach will be informative to aspiring applicants and also to college counselors in their schools. We have a core group of about 70 interviewers - and we are always welcoming new ones! We need interviewers in all parts of Colorado, so don't be shy. We are looking forward to a fruitful year; please join us. Anna Jones 2001 Schools Committee ReportColorado had 150 applicants for the class of 2005. Eleven were admitted early action, and seven more were admitted during the regular action cycle for a total of 18. This was a talented group with a wide range of academic and athletic abilities -- skiing, ice hockey, writing, and climbing. Students came from all over -- metro Denver public and private schools, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Swink, Durango, Aspen, Cortez, and Tabernash. Thank you everyone! Anna Jones 2002 Schools Committee ReportOnce again, the College had over 19,000 applicants. Colorado had a larger number of applicants this year -- 186, compared with last year's 157. It seemed like this year we had more applicants who could have had better counseling. These were the candidates with low SAT scores and few extra-curriculars, who didn't really have much of a chance, but wanted to toss an application at Harvard. We had a total of 14 acceptees this year, 9 accepted early action; 5 regular action: 7 from metro-Denver area; 4 from Colorado Springs area or SE Colorado; 3 from Greeley, Fort Collins, and Limon. I want especially to thank my dedicated volunteer interviewers, who interview personally each applicant. I was asked to estimate the number of hours that we together contribute, and came up with approximately 1500, the equivalent of a 3/4 time employee! Anna Jones 2003 Schools Committee ReportThings went well this year. We had 25 interviewers at both our Fall meeting with Hannah (our regional admissions officer) and the Spring ranking meeting. The Fall meeting was so fascinating that even Dave Thomas doesn't want to miss it next year! Once again we completed every single interview - 192. Our "rankings" were listened to -- our interviews made a difference for a number of applicants. About 45-50 students and their parents came to the April reception. Of 19 accepted candidates, 15 chose to matriculate this Fall -- and 80% yield. We sponsored our first Early College Awareness program in April for Aurora middle school children, which was very successful. We present Harvard Book Awards in about a dozen schools. As you can see, we have accomplished a lot, as a group and as individuals. Thanks again to all who helped with the Schools Committee this year. We can always use more help, especially with the outlying regions of the state. If you're a Harvard alum in Colorado please contact me if you can volunteer some time for this worthy effort!
